The Terry Fox statue located near the BC Place Stadium is a monument representing Terry Fox, a Canadian athelete, humanitarian, and cancer research activity. He embarked on a run from east coast to west coast, after having a leg amputated due to cancer, to raise awareness for cancer research. Fox left a legacy, uniting people from many different walks of life and no letting himself be pitied due to being disabled. It signifies how an ordinary person can accomplish remarkable feats. Fox is heralded as a national hero.
How do you think the art has made meaning in the community?
The art stands to remind and emphasize Fox’s qualities as cherished Canadian values, such as compassion, commitment and perseverance. His accomplishment helped with inclusion of disabled people in society by emphasizing a person’s ability instead, proving this by completing his nation wide run.Â

This piece of local art, “Return of the Sockeye”, can be viewed at the heart of Coquitlam’s Spirit Square.
When viewed in-person, the sculpture is composed of various madia including metal, glass, and water to represent a sockeye salmon. First created in 2010 by the collaborative efforts of Ross Ireland, Chris Phillips, and Phillips Farevaag Smallenberg, Return of the Sockeye can be seen during the day or in the night when it is illuminated in the square.
The sculpture itself is composed of three pieces, the metal salmon, two concrete pillars, and a water feature in the summer. The metal salmon is arched over the concrete pillars that represent a dam and in the summer streams of water and red glass (representing salmon eggs) can be viewed from one side of it. As the standalone piece of art in the square, the sculpture stands out and can be witnessed from any end of the park. As a whole, the sockeye represents the stories embedded in Coquitlam’s First Nation’s and their rich history.
How do you think the art has made meaning in the community?
The abstract, intricate, and immediately recognizable nature of the statue has served to be the anchor of Spirit Square for almost a decade. As a local piece of art, the statue represents the dense past of Coquitlam’s First Nations as well as the cultural and genetic significance of sockeye salmon that annually spawned in the Coquitlam River.
As a community, Coquitlam—kĘ·ikʷəƛ̓əm (Kwikwetlem) literally meaning “red fish up the river”— had an abundance of sockeye salmon until the 1900s until the BC government built a dam that led to their disappearance. However, since the 2000s multiple local First Nation’s groups have been successful in bringing sockeye back to the Coquitlam River.Â
Today, the statue holistically represents the joining of nature with people and pays specific tribute to the sockeye that exist at the heart of Coqutilam’s history. Furthermore, the statue symbolizes the resilience of Coquitlam’s First Nations and their efforts to maintain the community’s closely knit relationship with nature as time passes.

Community art provides people with a very important way in which they can express themselves. Sometimes it is hard for them to express themselves with mere words, but art allows them to present an idea in a visual way that other people can understand and appreciate. Baltimore city has a long history of gun violence which frustrates a lot of our residents. One of the paintings displayed at Suspended Brewery features an expression and plea from the artist to stop the killing. This is an example of how art can speak to the community.

This art resides in beautiful Angel Run Park–located within the Perry Hall community. Nestled right between the Perry Hall library and a multitude of active housing developments, Angel Run comes equipped with a children’s playground, as well as a rec field just across the street. The art seen at Angel Run can be enjoyed by everybody–children and their parents enjoying the playground, and even patrons of the library looking to find their next great read. It is a welcome treat to any individual enjoying the summer sunshine–walking their dog, or breaking a sweat on a run.
How do you think the art has made meaning in the community?
The art situated at Angel Run radiates positivity–just as the name of the park would suggest. By the entrance to the park and near the playground sits the butterfly themed statue. As Perry Hall is a young and thriving community, and the park is most often frequented by children and their parents looking to make use of the playground, I feel that the butterfly motif represents the hope and freedom of youth; a true representation of the children who light the way for the future. In that regard, Angel Park represents a breath of fresh air to all for visit the park. It has become the de-facto location for events within the community, which include performing arts, such as dances and music, as well as the yearly Angel Park Run–a 5k that is open to the entire community. To the members of Perry Hall, Angel Run park represents the place where we all come together to enjoy our neighbors, as well as the people we cherish the most. How is this art specifically seen in the community?
One of Baltimore’s oldest neighborhoods, at the heart of Mount Vernon, is the original Washington Monument. It’s easily accessible from downtown and retains its original charm even as the modern age has evolved around it. Sprinkled among museums, theaters, libraries, and performance venues are a number of eclectic boutiques and tried and true eateries. George Washington – first American president, commander of the Continental Army, president of the Constitutional Convention, and farmer. Through these roles, Washington exemplified character and leadership. In recognition of the unique status of Mount Vernon Place in the cultural history of Baltimore and the United States, the National Park Service began a multiphase effort in 2003 to shed new light on this National Historic Landmark’s storied past. The first major public monument in the United States to honor the nation’s first president, and the only known urban landscape with an architectural pedigree that includes Robert Mills, the Olmsteds, and the firm of Carrere & Hastings, Mount Vernon Place also plays an important commemorative role as a war memorial and symbol of Franco-American cooperation. The combined Historic American Buildings Survey and Historic American Landscapes Survey recording project got started with photo documentation of the four squares collectively known as Mount Vernon Place, along with historical research on several neighboring historic buildings. In addition, a comprehensive site history of the four squares has highlighted important periods in the site’s evolution. Built in the shape of an Egyptian obelisk, evoking the timelessness of ancient civilizations, the Washington Monument embodies the awe, respect, and gratitude the nation felt for its most essential Founding Father.

The Washington Monument and Mount Vernon Place with Their Rich History Have an Important Place in the Cultural Development of Baltimore and the Nation. For over two hundred years, Mount Vernon Place has contributed to life in the city of Baltimore. When a group of private Baltimore citizens came together in 1809 to erect the first monument to George Washington in the country, they likely did not know that its construction in the woods of Revolutionary War hero John Eager Howard’s Belvidere estate, would reorient the development of their city, and create a place as unique as Mount Vernon Place. For two centuries residents and visitors have toured the Monument and climbed to its top, and the surrounding squares of Mount Vernon Place have hosted important civic events. Explore its history through beautiful monuments. The Washington Monument and Mount Vernon Place, both of which have a long and interesting history Have a significant role in the development of Baltimore’s and the nation’s cultural landscape. Mount Vernon Place has made a positive contribution to the city of Baltimore’s quality of life for more than two hundred years. It all started with one man. Clement Knefel was a major in the U.S. Army, stationed in Germany during the Nuremberg War Crimes Trials, when he learned about the Katyń Forest Massacre. He dreamed of commemorating the victims of this crime with a memorial plaque in Patterson Park. In the early 1970s he began raising money by selling soft drinks and sandwiches at local festivals, collecting small donations, and appealing to veterans’ organizations. He managed to raise $1,600 after 10 years. Major Knefel approached the Maryland Division of the Polish American Congress for help to honor the Katyń victims and all mistreated prisoners-of-war. In 1989, the Katyń Memorial Committee of Baltimore was born.

Baltimore is full of surprises. And this monument is one of them. Located on a round-about across from the Hopkins Business School, on Aliceanna and President streets. the sculpture commemorates the massacre of Polish soldiers by the Soviet forces in 1940. The bronze monument towers above the surrounding street with abstract forms. It looks like a giant flame, with human figures engulfed in the fire. The base has a fountain with water trickling, a counterpoint to the rising forms. You would miss the impact of the figures if you drove by in a car. During my stay in the area, I would walk by the monument until I stopped to admire it. The history it memorializes is very shocking. Nonetheless, its art moves you to reflect and remember the lives of those killed. It honors the fallen and gives the living a reminder of the atrocities of history. If you are in the area, don’t miss this spectacular monument.

Art may help people communicate more effectively and reduce feelings of loneliness. Self-esteem, confidence, and self-awareness have all been demonstrated to improve with this form of treatment. A few art therapists started thinking about how art therapy may be done in communities in the late 1990s. In this paradigm, art might serve communities rather than simply people who met in a common area to create personal work. As art therapists began collaborating with community workers, they used their creativity to bring positive changes to communities and neighborhoods (Malchiodi, 2007).
Bourdieu (1984) defined cultural value as symbolic capital. He felt that cultural worth is authoritatively embodied in objects or indications of cultural creation.
When housing buildings and their people are ignored as cultural icons, it is easy to presume that those who live there are worthless.
Mosaics were another type of art that was put in the housing project to combat the impacts of being neglected.
Babushka wants his work to let others know that we have cultural contributions. The Babushka project was regularly featured on council flyers promoting children’s and family services, on government postcards promoting community events, and on many magazine covers and fanzines. This community art initiative attempted to express the inhabitants’ concerns and aspirations in order to change the public’s perspective of a marginalized group. That film gave a collective voice to a previously unheard community.
Jonathan Borofsky’s Male/Female is a 15.5-meter (51-foot) tall hollow stainless-steel sculpture near the entrance to Pennsylvania Station in Baltimore, Maryland. With pulsating light-emitting diode light, it shows overlapping enormous masculine and female shapes.
How do you think the art has made meaning in the community?
Male/Female is made of metal and comprises of two figures that intersect at a 90-degree angle, like oversized cut-out dolls. The sculpture looks to be a man body from one angle. It looks to be a female shape from another angle. When seen from a different perspective, the silhouettes seem to be merging – part man, part woman.
They are mental representations that represent the idea of a person, a character, or the presenter of a political or social ideal since they are imagined rather than actual. It’s referred to as “freedom” in Germany and “humanity” in Baltimore. The figures, on the other hand, are invariably some components of Borofsky himself, larger than life, standing, acting, and eventually directing us through his own ideas and imagined actions. As such, the first objective was to connect neighbors through art making as a way of establishing relationships rather than allowing the community to be defined as a static collection of buildings (Elmendorf, 2010).

In 2019, this mural on the front of Kerb Restaurant was made to show support to a local child who was fighting leukemia.
How do you think the art has made meaning in the community?
Childhood cancer is a topic that people should be more aware of. The support this mural brings to children is impactful, and shows them that they are not alone. The mural depicts community, solidarity, and determination to not give up fighting. It also advocates for more art in the community and calls for people to come together and create something new.

How is this art specifically seen in the community?
Hurt, anger, unrest and HOPE. The mural is of Freddie Gray, a 25-year-old black male from West Baltimore neighborhood of Sandtown-Winchester, who was arrested in his neighborhood and later died in police custody due to a severed spine. The mural depicts Freddie Gray’s face with the riots that followed his death behind him. There are 2 sides of the mural one with people from his community fighting for and advocating for him and others affected by police brutality. On the left side there are several mean in suits holding an American Flag, this depicts the justice system that continues to fail African Americans. It depicts a system that was not made for the community Freddie Gray was a part of.
How do you think the art has made meaning in the community?
This work of art in particular for the Baltimore City community provided an outlet for healing and expression. The unrest that followed after Freddie Gray’s untimely death in police custody shocked the world. The lasting impact for the community was devastating. They had ruined their own community where they live. To have something beautiful in the midst of chaos was meaningful to the community. Because of Freddie Gray, the community and even people outside of the community continue to fight and advocate for African Americans who are victims of police brutality.

The alley has beauty and meaning. The alley is full of graffiti which is why it’s called graffiti alley and graffiti is a form of art. The alley is meaning full because it has so much history. People of different race and age can come to the alley to graffiti which is a representation of art. They can express their self, be there self. As a person who is born and raised in Baltimore, I know Baltimore people take pride and where they are from, and the alley shows people of different race and age can come together admire art in their city.

This mural has been very well known for years now in the Bel Air area. Marshall Adams had painted this amazing mural years back and it is now still very popular. This mural represents the historic downtown Bel Air compared to modern day Bel Air and is very interesting. I love being able to drive by and see the beautiful art.
How do you think the art has made meaning in the community?
I think this art has made meaning because fellow community members love where they are from and this is a great mural of downtown Bel Air. Especially to community members who have been around to see the changes in Bel Air, I think they appreciate the art that represents the historical portion from what the town used to be compared to modern day. It is a beautiful way to show appreciation to the town and community.

How do you think the art has made meaning in the community?
The art in graffiti alley has allowed people to shed more light on social injustice in more peaceful ways (through art). While getting the point across, it allows others to view the pressing matters of the community through a different perspective. Furthermore, it is also used as an area where people seek to expand upon their artistical skills, which allows an individual to express their creativity and uniqueness through art, which in turn brings more positivity, and life to the surrounding area/community.

For me, this art is the representation of simplicity, tradition, and sensibility. It brings a refresh to the street otherwise covered in concrete and gray, busy, and in a rush. This art brings some colors to the place and great vibes to the place
How do you think the art has made meaning in the community?
The Charm City Crabs represents the main cultural and gastronomic charms of Baltimore, and more specific Maryland, the Blue Crabs of Maryland the state’s most tasty dish. It is known that crabs are very important to the community since they are predator and prey living in Chesapeake Bay food web. They are necessary in maintaining the sea food chain in the bay in contained levels. Yet their famous comes from the buttery taste and delicate texture of the meat. Even though there are blue crabs in many other locations and countries, the taste and texture are very different considering that only the crabs from this region need to hibernate in the winter times due to low temperatures, the proper sea life cycle in the bay. So, to conclude, this art represents part of the culture of Maryland and Baltimore, as well as the pride of having the best crab. This art now is part of Baltimore eternalizing a character that is part of many family dinners, and friends’ parties, and celebrations

The art piece chosen for this project was at a pop-up art gallery that was created by the artist, Ace. The artist created different works of art that reflected his own emotions and struggles that he has faced all while growing up in the Essex community. The pieces displayed have been shared on social media by the people who were at the gallery that also live in the local community, thus showing more locals the work created by Ace. Analyzing different forms of art that are shown in the community, the themes usually fall under paintings or graffiti that express sadness, anger, happiness, or a way for someone to express their sense of self. Ace incorporated almost all of those themes that are seen throughout the local community.
How do you think the art has made meaning in the community?
Reflecting on the artwork, the piece adds meaning and uniqueness to the Baltimore County area, all while incorporating one’s struggles and emotions that others in the community could also relate to. The artist put their heart into their work, and through people going to the pop-up event and thus sharing the work on social media, the work done pays off. When local artists create art, it influences the area around them by expressing or changing opinions, sharing experiences, and humanizing the community. I believe the art piece can resonate with others who live in the same area and inspire other local artists to create work that can further be shared in the county.

The art represents that unity that the school has I think it’s also to be a piece of social acceptance no matter who you are.

Originally seen as a positive part of the community, being a statue of one of the founding members of Granville, it has somewhat recently been under scrutiny due to the history of the figure the statue is portraying, John Deighton. He once owned a bar in the Granville area called the “Globe Saloon,” with his patrons nicknaming him “Gassy Jack” due to his talkative nature. He was such a pillar of the community that the locals started calling the area around his bar “Gastown.” However, it has come to light that after his wife’s death, he ended up taking her 12 year old niece as his new wife. Activists have petitioned to have the statue removed due to the age of his second wife as well as her ethnicity as both his wives were Squamish women.
How do you think the art has made meaning in the community?
The Gassy Jack statue was commissioned in 1970 to promote business in the area. For some, it respects the past and aesthetically complements the area of Gastown. For others, it is a reminder of the colonial history of Canada and how influential members of society can take advantage of more vulnerable groups.

Rejuvenation is seen as a positive art installation in the Edmonds community. However, due to its small size and location not being near a major foot traffic area, the art installation is perceived but does not invoke any deep thoughts by the majority of residents. When residents are inquired regarding the art piece, it is generally viewed with positivity while others see it as a sign of a changing community; this view point arrives from the knowledge that this art piece was commissioned by private real estate developers.
How do you think the art has made meaning in the community?
Rejuvenation was commissioned by Bosa Properties Inc. as an art piece for the City of Burnaby and sculpted by George Pratt. This piece honors the civic vision of Burnaby (Edmonds) of protecting it’s waterways, and volunteer stream keepers, young and old, who care for Byrne Creek. Located next to a coffee shop and Burnaby Public Library, this piece is a welcome addition to the community. The fountain reminds Edmonds residents of a small stream that used to be located in that area, however has since disappeared due to urbanization.

How is this art specifically seen in the community?
The Goddess of Democracy statue at UBC is a replica of the famous “Goddess of Democracy” statue created during the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests. It is a radical symbol that is seen positively by supporters of democratic movements in China, and negatively by the supporters of the Chinese government, or those who value economic stability over involvement in politics. The statue is a public display of Vancouver’s stance on this controversial issue, and an example of when Vancouver did not kowtow to foreign governmental pressure.
How do you think the art has made meaning in the community?
Vancouver has a large Chinese Canadian demographic, with 37% of UBC students identifying themselves as Chinese, according to UBC demographic information of 2012. Built with the support of the Chinese Canadian community, the Goddess of Democracy statue is a symbol of the fight for the democratic rights and it has become a place where people can lay flowers and pay respects to the victims of the Tiananmen Square Massacre of 1989, where pro-democracy student demonstrators were killed by Chinese soldiers.
