One of Baltimore’s oldest neighborhoods, at the heart of Mount Vernon, is the original Washington Monument. It’s easily accessible from downtown and retains its original charm even as the modern age has evolved around it. Sprinkled among museums, theaters, libraries, and performance venues are a number of eclectic boutiques and tried and true eateries. George Washington – first American president, commander of the Continental Army, president of the Constitutional Convention, and farmer. Through these roles, Washington exemplified character and leadership. In recognition of the unique status of Mount Vernon Place in the cultural history of Baltimore and the United States, the National Park Service began a multiphase effort in 2003 to shed new light on this National Historic Landmark’s storied past. The first major public monument in the United States to honor the nation’s first president, and the only known urban landscape with an architectural pedigree that includes Robert Mills, the Olmsteds, and the firm of Carrere & Hastings, Mount Vernon Place also plays an important commemorative role as a war memorial and symbol of Franco-American cooperation. The combined Historic American Buildings Survey and Historic American Landscapes Survey recording project got started with photo documentation of the four squares collectively known as Mount Vernon Place, along with historical research on several neighboring historic buildings. In addition, a comprehensive site history of the four squares has highlighted important periods in the site’s evolution. Built in the shape of an Egyptian obelisk, evoking the timelessness of ancient civilizations, the Washington Monument embodies the awe, respect, and gratitude the nation felt for its most essential Founding Father.
